Standing Up For Film, Creativity And Meaningful Storytelling
Modern culture moves at a relentless pace. Endless scrolling, disposable content and shrinking attention spans have changed how people consume stories and media. In many ways, audiences are encouraged to move on before they have even had the chance to feel something meaningful. At Stormglide UK, we believe creativity deserves better than that.
Film has always had the power to stop people in their tracks. A powerful scene, a thoughtful piece of dialogue or even a quiet moment can stay with someone for years. Genuine storytelling asks audiences to slow down, pay attention and connect emotionally. That kind of connection cannot be replicated by quick bursts of empty entertainment designed only to keep people scrolling or give a dopamine hit to the smartphone user.
As creatives, we have a responsibility to protect meaningful work and support experiences that bring people together. Cinemas, books, documentaries and thoughtful visual storytelling all encourage people to engage with the world more deeply. They remind us what it means to feel present and connected, rather than distracted and detached.
We live in a world that is now coerced to think that 9×16 (reels / stories) - ie to fit the format of a phone screen is normal and preferred. It’s the opposite to 16×9, which is the language of modern cinema. And while the portrait format of 9×16 has its place and can have impact, range and more, human vision goes beyond 180 degrees of vision and we are able to take in cinematic landscape visuals.
We also believe audiences still want substance, honesty and creativity with heart. There is enormous value in making work that lasts longer than a few seconds on a screen. This bank holiday, we encouraged people to step away from the noise and reconnect with culture that inspires them. When was the last time a film truly stayed with you long after it ended?
Food for thought, while we’re all being conditioned by big tech companies.
